Lana Del Rey is getting ready to release a new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell. Following singles “Mariners Apartment Complex” and “Venice Bitch” last September – plus a live premiere of “How To Disappear” and numerous teased songs in October – Lana is back with a third single ahead of the album. Today she dropped “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it,” a minimalistic, melancholy track with a silver lining. It was previously known as “Sylvia Plath” when Lana shared some of its lyrics.
“hope is a dangerous thing” begins with Lana crooning over moody piano chords. She describes the elegant crowd she runs with, and the resulting stress from being compared to them. In the chorus, Lana references Sylvia Plath (an author after whom Lana named another song on her upcoming album), illuminating the dark period she’s in. Lana continues, “Don’t ask if I’m happy, you know that I’m not, but at best I can say I’m not sad, ’cause hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have.” It’s not until the end that Lana confirms that she has hope. The new song is heart-wrenching and raw, but it ends with a glimmer of promise.

You can stream or download “hope is a dangerous thing” from all the major music providers here. The song will appear on Lana’s upcoming album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, due out later this year. Lana previously released two other singles from it: “Mariners Apartment Complex” and “Venice Bitch.” Throughout October 2018, Lana also teased a few other songs: “Cinnamon” and an unknown song featuring Machine Gun Kelly. She performed “How To Disappear” live, and a track called “Happiness Is A Butterfly,” which Lana teased early in 2018, may also appear on the record.
However, the two short country songs that Lana performed in December may not appear on the album.
A week ago, Lana teased another new song. While its title is unknown, Lana sings, “In your car I’m a star, and I’m burning through you.” Listen to the clip below:
Lana’s last album, Lust For Life, came out in July 2017. Lana entered the studio in January 2018, working with Jack Antonoff on the project. There’s no release date for Norman Fucking Rockwell yet, but it should be out by this spring.
