Vanessa Carlton Says “Love Is An Art” May Be Title Of Her Next Album

Throughout most of this year, Vanessa Carlton has been touring North America, and she’s treated lucky fans to a new song. “Love Is An Art” is a song she recently wrote, and its live debut hints at its future inclusion in an album. Vanessa’s last record, Liberman, came out in October 2015. More recently, we got two live EPs: Liberman Live and Earlier Things LiveWith the Liberman era coming to a close, Vanessa is now looking ahead to album #6.

In Toronto last week, Vanessa sat down with Katrina Lat of Live In Limbo. In addition to describing Liberman, she also spoke about writing new music and planning her next album. When talking about trying new approaches to songwriting, Vanessa revealed that she recently co-wrote a song with another songwriter:

I wrote with someone, and we wrote a song, and it came out in like five minutes. That was cool. But you have to really set up the environment to do it. I don’t think it’s good to be too closed off, but I do definitely have a rhythm to how I write.

…The trickiest thing in a co-write is when you start getting insecure. That was always my greatest fear, like “I would never want to read this out loud to a stranger.” If you’re in a workshop type environment, you have to be willing to throw things out there and not judge them. That can be hard… It’s all about chemistry. You set yourself up and see what happens.

Vanessa’s new music is “just starting to take shape. There’s a real delayed reaction to all big things in my life, in terms of when they finally get to a song from me.” Part of that delay may be coming from her baby girl. She admits to being easily distracted by 2-year-old daughter, making it hard to focus on writing songs.

After playing “Love Is An Art” live for the last few months, Vanessa’s next confession may not be that much of a surprise: She revealed that Love Is An Art may be the title of the new record! Vanessa explained, “I think that really embodies what this record is going to be.”

Vanessa also talked about her dreams of film scoring and attending the women’s march earlier this year. See the full interview below:

It’s evident that Vanessa is still in the early stages of writing the new album, yet she has a clear vision of where her songs are headed. “Love Is An Art” introduces themes that will likely reappear throughout the next record.

Vanessa previously mentioned that she’d starting to work on her next album. She’s currently writing new songs, and will likely begin recording later this year. The upcoming sixth studio album will be her first written since having a child. Her daughter, Sidney, was born in early 2015 after Vanessa had already recorded all of Liberman.

Vanessa Carlton Performs New Song, “Love Is An Art”

After releasing her fifth album, Liberman, in fall 2015, Vanessa Carlton embarked on a tour that produced two live EPs: Liberman Live and Earlier Things Live. Now Vanessa is back on tour in support of those EPs, and her live show is already bringing some new goodies. At a show in Toronto on March 3rd, Vanessa performed a brand new song called “Love Is An Art.”

The song is slow and moving, ambience building up with the sparse lyrics. “Love Is An Art” describes getting to know each other – the weakness, struggles, and all – and build up a protective relationship. It’s a lovely song that captures your full attention. Will it appear on the next studio album Vanessa releases? For now, fans can enjoy the live recording. Watch Vanessa’s live performance of “Love Is An Art” below:

This is not the first time Vanessa has debuted a brand new song live. Prior to Liberman‘s release, Vanessa performed many of its songs during tours. Fans heard songs like “House Of Seven Swords” and “Matter Of Time” years before the album came out.

Vanessa has already mentioned that she’s starting to work on her next album. She’s currently writing new songs, and will likely begin recording later this year. The upcoming sixth studio album will be her first written since having a child. Her daughter, Sidney, was born in early 2015 after Vanessa had already recorded all of Liberman. Vanessa is still early in the process, but hopefully she’ll reveal more about her next album in the coming months. “Love Is An Art” may appear on her next record.

You can buy Liberman and the two live EPs on iTunes or Vanessa’s official store now. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out tour dates and get tickets before it’s too late. Vanessa’s tour is taking her across most of North America between now and the middle of April. Keep checking back here for all the latest Vanessa Carlton music news.

“Love Is An Art” Lyrics

Will you tell me your story?
I just want to listen
I just want the words to sink into me

I know it’s been hard for you
I know that you’re getting through
If I could be the knife that cuts you free

Always moving the light through the dark
Always building up, falling apart
Love is an art
Love is an art

If we build a house together
Structured to withstand the weather
Shelter from this Tennessee storm

Always moving the light through the dark
Always building up, falling apart
Love is an art
Love is an art
Love is an art

It’s a natural game
It’s a natural game

I don’t want to need you
I don’t want to leave you
I wonder if our babies know who we are

Always moving the light through the dark
Always building up, falling apart
Love is an art
Love is an art
Love is an art

‘Liberman Live’ Is Vanessa Carlton’s First Live Album

Vanessa Carlton has finally come out with her first ever live album. Liberman Live was released on October 21st. Liberman Live is a beautiful showcase of Vanessa’s siren-like voice and soft, earthy melodies. The intimacy of her small performance can be heard through the speakers, as if you were there with her. Liberman‘s hypnotizing music is conveyed perfectly in the live album. Vanessa states that the record allows listeners to “hear” where she’s at musically, especially if they haven’t heard 2015’s Liberman.

She first announced the album back on September 27th in a Facebook post:

Vanessa had hinted at her live album months before the announcement, releasing videos of live performances of “Matter Of Time” and “House Of Seven Swords.” Following the September announcement, she released videos of “Operator” and “River” to promote the upcoming album.

Vanessa and her band recorded Liberman Live in Nashville, TN, during her 2015 fall tour. Because of her October move to the Tennessee city, Vanessa called Nashville her “new home” during a new Q&A. While listening to Liberman Live, you can take a listen to Vanessa’s hometown crowd.

Vanessa’s live album includes eight songs:

1. Take It Easy
2. Blue Pool
3. Nothing Where Something Used To Be
4. House Of Seven Swords
5. Operator
6. Willows
7. Matter Of Time
8. River

You can buy Liberman Live on iTunes and on Vanessa Carlton’s store now! Keep checking back here for all the latest Vanessa Carlton news.

See Vanessa Carlton’s Performance Of “River” From Upcoming Live Album

Just two weeks ago Vanessa Carlton shared a live recording of her single, “Operator,” off her upcoming first live album. Today we get another taste of the concert with a performance of her Liberman track, “River.” Like the Living Room Sessions version of the song that appears on the deluxe edition of Liberman, this performance of “River” lets the lyrics and melody speak for themselves. It’s a gorgeous, moving ballad that finds strength in its traditional piano-singer format. The live version of “River” heard here is a lovely improvement on the original album version.

Vanessa is joined by her husband, John McCauley III, on guitar and Skye Steele providing backing vocals and violin.

The performance was filmed, directed, and edited by Jesse DeFlorio. The black and white footage lends to the song’s simplistic beauty. Check out the live performance of “River” below:

“Operator” will appear on Liberman Live, out October 21st. Earlier this year, we also got premature hints of the live set with “Matter Of Time” and “House Of Seven Swords.” You can pre-order Liberman Live now ahead of its release. The album will include eight songs:

1. Take It Easy
2. Blue Pool
3. Nothing Where Something Used To Be
4. House Of Seven Swords
5. Operator
6. Willows
7. Matter Of Time
8. River
