Garbage Drops Lyric Video For New Song, “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed”

Following the first single, “Empty,” Garbage has suddenly shared another new song from their upcoming album, Strange Little Birds. “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed” is a dark, slow-building song written by drummer Butch Vig; it also gave the album its name, and is said to be the centerpiece of Strange Little Birds. It comes with a lyric video featuring wild animals hunting and being hunted.

“Even Though Our Love Is Doomed” is slow and dusky, with minimalistic instrumentation setting the tone for the thought-provoking lyrics. Shirley Manson sings low, towards the bottom of her range, adding to the song’s tension and gloomy mood. The song gradually introduces more sounds and layers, eventually crescendoing into a noisy, volatile blast in the final minute. It may take a few listens to get into, but “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed” is powerful and worth the effort.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shirley spoke about “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed”:

I wish I could take credit for that song, but that came into my lap from Butch and was fully formed. Generally speaking, I don’t like to be told what to sing. He brought this song to me and said, “I have this idea, if you dig it, cool, if not, no hard feelings.” He played it for me, and I was blown away. It was utterly perfect. I immediately said, “I want to sing it right now.” And the vocal, it’s the first take that you hear. It was me basically learning the song. But it has a fragility that really matched the music. It’s rare that songs come to you perfect. Usually you have to spend time with them or f—k around. But even Butch, who’s incredibly modest, knew how good it was. It’s the throbbing heart of the entire record.

The lyric video is made up of footage of animals hunting their prey. We see cheetahs, tigers, wolves, snakes, and more chasing and fighting each other. It gives “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed” new meaning and perspective, especially in lines like the repeated, “Why do we kill the things we love the most?” Watch the lyric video for “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed” below:
