Earlier this year, just as Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness was beginning a tour in June, he debuted a brand new song called “Fire Escape.” It was our first taste of the new music he’d been cooking up in New York City in the prior months as he began working on his second studio album. As we predicted, “Fire Escape” is now the lead single from the upcoming (and still unnamed) Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness album.
“Fire Escape” is upbeat and wordy, Andrew painting late night images in a big city love song. While the live version was dominated by “oh-oh, oh-oh-oh” chants in the background, the studio version takes on a slicker, grimier tone. It’s infectious and bold, and has a bit more force than the previous Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness singles.
The new song comes with a lyric video set against NYC scenes. “Fire Escape” is just the first new single, with the second Wilderness album expected out later this year or early in 2017. Andrew has not confirmed a title or release date yet, but hopefully that announcement is just around the corner. In the meantime, check out the “Fire Escape” lyric video below:
Andrew also shared the following comments about the song:
Andrew McMahon was originally in the punk band Something Corporate in the early 2000s. He later formed Jack’s Mannequin, and in 2014 announced his new solo project, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. He released his self-titled debut album in October 2014, led by the long-lasting hit, “Cecilia And The Satellite.”
Earlier this year, Andrew began writing and recording for his second Wilderness album. In January he’d already written 5 good songs, and in May Andrew told EW that this will be his best record yet. He’s been recording in New York City rather than his usual home state of California.
“Fire Escape” is just our first taste of the new songs Andrew is preparing. Earlier this summer, fans got to hear his dreamy collaboration with Lindsey Stirling in their Pete’s Dragon single, “Something Wild.” Andrew also recently finished up a tour with Weezer and Panic! At The Disco. The new Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness album could be out as early as this fall. You can read up on all we know about it so far, and keep checking back for all the latest Andrew McMahon music news.
