Kelly Clarkson is hard at work recording her 7th studio album. After 14 years with RCA, she signed with Atlantic Records last summer, and her next album is going to be soulful pop rather than the pop rock we’re used to hearing from her. She shared plenty of studio updates last July, August, and September. In October, Kelly was busy promoting her new children’s book, River Rose And The Magical Lullaby. During the many interviews about the book, she talked extensively about her new music, too. In November, we learned about another songwriter working with Kelly, what classic singers the new music sounds like… and when the album will likely be out. 2016 ended with some final details about the upcoming record during some December interviews.
We didn’t learn anything new in January, though a partial demo of a song called “Soap And Water” leaked. This month was fairly quiet, too. Luckily, Kelly confirmed that she’s nearly done recording the new album. We also learned about a few more collaborators.
Songwriter Nick Monson, who’s worked with Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, revealed that he recently was in Nashville writing with Kelly. He didn’t elaborate further, but it’s great to know another collaborator for the album.
On February 8th, Kelly spoke to Keith Caulfield and Katie something for their Pop Shop Podcast. They start Kelly’s lengthy introduction around 31:00 mark, launching into their phone interview with her. Kelly talked about “Piece By Piece” (Idol Version), the Grammys, a 2006 cancer scare, and her new song “Love Goes On” with Aloe Blacc.
She only briefly mentioned her new music, explaining why she can’t attend this year’s Grammy Awards: “I”m like knee-deep in my record, and I’m gonna be on a different coast”. She later confirmed that she’s in the “final stages of recording.”
Kelly also reiterated the different sound of her new album, saying it’s a “fresh take on ’90s R&B urban pop” and that it doesn’t sound like anyone else. She enthused that it’s “by far my favorite album I’ve ever been a part of.”
Later in February, we also learned of a few more collaborators working on Kelly’s new album:
