Just two weeks ago, Paramore excited fans around the world with “Hard Times” and the announcement of their new album, After Laughter. The album will be out next week, but now fans can enjoy one more song while we count down the days. “Told You So” is a funky meditation on arguments and bitterness when the other person is wrong. Frontwoman Hayley Williams sings, “I hate to say ‘I told you so,’ but they love to say they told me” in the chorus. The bridge highlights another line: “Throw me into the fire, throw me in, pull me out again.”
“Told You So” also comes with a music video. We first see Hayley, alone in a dark house with just street lamps partially illuminating her face. Meanwhile, drummer Zac Farro drives an old car, with Taylor York in the backseat with his guitar. Eventually Hayley escapes her home prison and joins the pair. She sits shotgun while they continue on their way in their matching red outfits.
Watch the video for “Told You So” below:
Zac Farro wrote and directed the video for “Told You So” with a little help from Aaron Joseph. They used Zac’s actual car for the video, as well as Taylor York’s house.
Hayley told THE FADER about how they came up with the concept for the video. It all started with the drives the band went on during recording sessions for the album:
Zac noticed that my anxiety and overall state was just a lot more peaceful on those drives and mentioned to me that it made him happy to see me rest for a moment. It means a lot that they conceptualized a video around a passing moment we had as friends.
Zac also spoke about the video:
“Told You So” is such a visual song to me. The rhythms and lyrics caught my attention from day one. So I knew the music video needed to be equally as striking and rhythmic.
Following “Hard Times,” this is our second taste of the new music. The new album will offer up another 10 new songs. Be sure to pick up After Laughter when it comes out next week on May 12th.
You can pre-order After Laughter on iTunes now and get an instant download of both “Hard Times” and “Told You So”. You can also choose from a number of After Laughter bundles on Paramore’s official store. Keep checking back here for all the latest Paramore news.
