Avril Lavigne Is Recording Vocals For New Album
As 2016 came to a close, Avril Lavigne promised that her long-awaited 6th album will be out by this year’s end. In March, she announced that she has left Epic Records and signed with BMG, and by May, production was underway for her upcoming album. Avril’s been quiet since, but as of this month we know she’s officially recording vocals. She’s been working with recording engineer, mixer, and producer Chris Baseford. He previously worked on Avril’s self-titled 2013 album, including production credits on “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” as well as her 2015 charity single, “Fly.”
Vocals are generally the last parts recorded for an album. If Avril is recording vocals now, the rest of the instruments have most likely been recorded, and her album should be done very soon! After recording comes mixing and mastering, both of which usually take only a few weeks.

As Avril told Billboard in her BMG announcement last March, she’s been pushing herself as a songwriter. She has at least one song in mind that may be the lead single. It tackles her battle with Lyme disease that has kept her out of the spotlight the last few years. At the time, Avril was finishing up a few songs and looking for a producer for the album.
By May, when production officially began, Avril had likely chosen a producer. Although there’s been no announcement yet, it seems Avril is working with producer J.R. Rotem. They have been seen out together a few times this month, and it looks like they’re in more than a working relationship. Avril’s previous relationship with Chad Kroeger also began in the studio.
Avril’s last album, Avril Lavigne, came out nearly four years ago in November 2013. It was an eclectic mix, giving us masterpieces like “Give You What You Like” as well as unexpected (and polarizing) tracks like “Hello Kitty.”
Since then, Avril stepped out of the spotlight as she battled Lyme disease. She recorded a few new songs with other artists, including tracks with Nick Carter and Japanese band ONE OK ROCK. Avril also returned to her acting ambitions, voicing Snow White in the upcoming animated film, Charming. For the movie, Avril also joined Ashley Tisdale and G.E.M. to sing “Trophy Boy,” written by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump.
Avril has also been actively writing and demoing songs for her sixth album. She’s shared plenty of sneak peeks along the way, even revealing some lyrics for songs presumably titled “Warrior” and “Crush.”
Now that Avril is on to the final stage of album recording, it won’t be too long before we get to hear some new songs. Catch up on all we know about the new record so far. Keep checking back here for more on Avril’s new music.
