As 2016 came to a close, Avril Lavigne promised that her long-awaited 6th album will be out by this year’s end. In March, she announced that she has left Epic Records and signed with BMG, and by May, production was underway for her upcoming album. Avril was quiet for a few months, but as of this August we know she’s officially been recording vocals with engineer, mixer, and producer Chris Baseford. Normally vocals are the last parts recorded for an album, though she’s recently been working with some instrumentalists, too. Is the album still on track for a 2017 release?
Avril revealed that drummer Kenny Aronoff and guitarist Zane Carney have both recently recorded parts for the album. Avril co-wrote some songs with Zane early last year, and it looks like we’ll get to hear some of those. Kenny stated that he’s doing drums for four tracks. Are these the final four songs to be recorded for the album? If so, we may still hear Avril’s new record late this year after all. Otherwise, 2018 is looking a lot more likely.
Fans speculated Avril must be working with producer J.R. Rotem. The two were spotted out together a few times this month, and it seems a business relationship has blossomed into something more. This week, Avril confirmed J.R. Rotem’s involvement in her upcoming album. She’s shared plenty of studio pics with him as they finish up her album.
Avril also confirmed drummer Kenny Aronoff’s involvement in her album.
Kenny revealed that he performed on four new songs for Avril’s upcoming album. She already did vocals all month, indicating those songs are finished. Are these four new songs the final tracks being recorded?

Avril also confirmed that some of the songs she’s written with Zane Carney will appear on her upcoming album. He evidently recorded guitars for some of the new songs. Are these the same songs for which Kenny recorded drums?
Avril ended her August recording blast with a nice note thanking her fans:
To my fans,
I just want to thank everyone for their patience as I work on putting together this new album. It’s been a long recovery and I want to make sure that this is perfect for you guys!! You only deserve my best effort and that’s what I’m going to deliver! I can’t wait to share the new music I’m working on, I promise it’ll be here before you know it!!
Based on all the studio updates Avril shared this month, it looks like Avril is close to finishing the album. She recorded vocals for a few weeks, most likely on songs that are otherwise finished now. Vocals are the last part to be recorded, and those tracks must be ready for mixing and mastering. However, she also has at least four new songs in the works. Kenny and Zane recorded drums and guitars, and the tracks will still need her vocals and possibly other arrangements. Are these the final four songs for the album?
Avril’s note promises new music “before you know it,” but it doesn’t specify if it will be out this year. The album could still come this November or December, but this late in the year, a 2018 release may be more likely. Either way, Avril’s fans have been patient and understanding, and she promises to release her best music yet. Whenever the album comes out, it looks like fans will be in for a treat!
As Avril told Billboard in her BMG announcement last March, she’s been pushing herself as a songwriter. She has at least one song in mind that may be the lead single. It tackles her battle with Lyme disease that has kept her out of the spotlight the last few years.
Avril’s last album, Avril Lavigne, came out nearly four years ago in November 2013. It was an eclectic mix, giving us masterpieces like “Give You What You Like” as well as unexpected (and polarizing) tracks like “Hello Kitty.”
Since then, Avril stepped out of the spotlight as she battled Lyme disease. She recorded a few new songs with other artists, including tracks with Nick Carter and Japanese band ONE OK ROCK. Avril also returned to her acting ambitions, voicing Snow White in the upcoming animated film, Charming. For the movie, Avril also joined Ashley Tisdale and G.E.M. to sing “Trophy Boy,” written by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump.
Avril has also been actively writing and demoing songs for her sixth album. She’s shared plenty of sneak peeks along the way, even revealing some lyrics for songs presumably titled “Warrior” and “Crush.”
Now that Avril is on to the final stages of album recording, it won’t be too long before we get to hear some new songs. Catch up on all we know about the new record so far. Keep checking back here for more on Avril’s new music.
