Avril Lavigne Details Her Upcoming “Next Level” Album

Avril Lavigne has been hard at work on her upcoming sixth studio album. The highly anticipated record was originally planned for a 2017 release, but at this point is guaranteed to come out this year. Over the last 12 months, Avril has revealed a few song titles (“Warrior,” “Crush”), registered new songs (“Lucky Ones,” “It Was In Me”), and enthused about the personal new songs. Last November, Avril said she had more than 20 songs ready and was planning to wrap recording by the end of the year. Now, only a few weeks into 2018, we know she’s now putting the finishing touches on her album.

Yesterday, Avril DM’d a fan account on Twitter when asked about the status of her new album. Avril stated that the album is in the mixing stage now, and should be complete by the end of February. Finding the right producers has contributed to the album delay, but Avril promises it’s been worth the wait. The album is “about as real as it gets” and is “next level.” Moreover, Avril hopes fans will connect to the new songs.

Today, Avril tweeted the eight words that describe her upcoming album: Personal, dear, intimate, dramatic, raw, powerful, strong, and unexpected. She ended by saying the “record is a true emotional journey.”

By all accounts, it sounds like Avril’s upcoming album will be her most mature, moving one yet. The “dramatic, raw” vibe also implies it will be more in the vein of Under My Skin and Goodbye Lullaby as opposed the the pop fun of The Best Damn Thing. On the other hand, Avril also reunited with songwriter Lauren Christy, who co-wrote some of the biggest hits on Let Go. Avril has worked with producer JR Rotem, and stated that this album will be more rock.

Avril’s musical director Steve Ferlazzo shared a behind-the-scenes shot on Friday of him recording keyboards. He stated the album should be wrapped by the end of this month (in contrast to Avril’s predicted February completion).

In non-album news, Avril has kept busy in the last couple of years. She recorded a few new songs with other artists, including tracks with Japanese band ONE OK ROCK and new production duo Grey. In time for the holidays, she released a cover of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Jonny Blu. Avril also returned to her acting ambitions, voicing Snow White in the upcoming animated film, Charming. For the movie, Avril also joined Ashley Tisdale and G.E.M. to sing “Trophy Boy,” written by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump.

Avril’s “next level” album will come out in 2018 via BMG RecordsCatch up on all we know about the new record so far, and keep checking back here for more on Avril’s new music. With any luck, we may be hearing new music this spring!
