Janelle Monáe Celebrates Women On New Single, “PYNK”
In February, Janelle Monáe announced her upcoming album, Dirty Computer, along with the release of two new singles. Today, fans get a third taste of the new music with “PYNK,” featuring Grimes. While “Make Me Feel” was a funky bi anthem and “Django Jane” was a political manifesto, the new song offers up a completely different sound. “PYNK” celebrates women around the world. Musically, it goes in a lighter, bubbly pop direction, complemented by delicate, high vocals and gentle finger snaps. It builds up to a joyful chorus in which Janelle and Grimes declare, “Boy, it’s cool if you got blue; we got the pink!” Indeed, there’s a lot more pink in our bodies than blue.
The music video for “PYNK” highlights the songs’ themes of women empowerment. It’s set in pink desert, Janelle and her girls riding in a pink convertible before happening upon the “PYNK Rest-Inn” where women eat free. Throughout the video, shades of rose, fuchsia, red dominate the screen, while women laugh and dance together. Early on, Janelle and a group of women don leotards and pants designed to look like vaginas. As she said in “Django Jane,” this is all about pussy power! But in spite of the imagery, “PYNK” is meant to celebrate all women – whether or not they have a vagina.
