Only one week ago, Janelle Monáe released her new single “PYNK.” Following “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane” in February, it was our third taste of her upcoming album, Dirty Computer. Today, fans get another new song with “I Like That.”
Ever the musical chameleon, Janelle introduces another new flavor of Dirty Computer on the new song. “I Like That” represents her smooth, soulful side. A pulsing vocal sets the beat, topped by a sliding choir and complemented by an “Oh me, oh me, oh me, oh my” refrain. Janelle sings about her many diverse sides: “A little crazy, a little sexy, a little cool.” She dives into a personal story in the rapped third verse, adding a new dynamic to the anthemic track.
Update 4/23: Today Janelle released the music video for “I Like That.” It starts with a mysterious, intimidating Janelle dressed in a black clock with a mask covering her eyes and nose. Stripping a bit of that away, we then see Janelle done up with black and white braids as she sits in the bleachers, multiple copies of her representing her different moods. We get one stop closer to her freer self in in a lush jungle setting; she’s joined by two other women and a peacock, but looks more comfortable. By the rapped third verse, Janelle is even more stripped down, shown in a bathtub with only a pair of flamingos to keep her company. The video perfectly represents the message of the song. It’s okay to have different sides to you and like unique things that others find weird.
