After sharing “Ohio” and “Teenage Rockstars,” plus a new song called “Blue Vacation” last Friday, Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness just gave fans another peek of the upcoming album, Upside Down Flowers. He gave an in-depth interview about the new music and performed a brand new song, “Paper Rain.”
Speaking with BUILD Series host Lauren Moraski, Andrew talked about how quickly he wrote this third Wilderness album. Instead of taking a break, he stuck with his rigorous writing practice, tapping into personal stories stretching back to his own childhood. Andrew described the inspiration behind “Ohio” and “Goodnight, Rock And Roll”. He also revealed that his first attempt at what became “Teenage Rockstars” was a Jack’s Mannequin song called “Starting A Rock Band.”
Andrew continued on to reveal how he usually writes songs, how being a dad has changed him, and why he’s so adamant about not becoming a nostalgia act. He also explained what “upside down flowers” are and spoke about the Dear Jack Foundation.
Following the illuminating interview, Andrew McMahon then joined his band to perform four songs. Three of them appear on Upside Down Flowers, while the closing track is one we all know and love.
The surprise came when Andrew opened the set with a previously unheard song. (He actually debuted it on Instagram live, but for all who missed it, this is the debut performance!) “Paper Rain” is an atmospheric ballad set in the Las Vegas desert. Andrew’s lyrics paint a vivid picture, melancholy and filled with detail. However, the chorus about “turning our luck around” lifts the mood and offers needed empowerment.
Watch the full interview and performance below. Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness played “Paper Rain” first, starting around the 29:00 mark (when there’s 19:41 left). He and the band followed that with “Teenage Rockstars,” “Ohio,” and the big hit from the first Wilderness album, “Cecilia And The Satellite.”
“Paper Rain” appears on Andrew McMahon’s upcoming album, Upside Down Flowers, out on November 16th. It’s his third Wilderness album, following the 2014 self-titled debut and last year’s Zombies On Broadway.
