Green Day Announces New Book, ‘Last Of The American Girls’

Green Day is branching out from music to publish their first book! This fall, fans will get to read Last Of The American Girls, an illustrated book for “rebel girls” and female empowerment. Fans may recognize the title as a single from Green Day’s 2009 album, 21st Century Breakdown. Indeed, the forthcoming book features that song’s lyrics alongside illustrations by Frank Caruso, who also co-wrote the book. You can pre-order it now ahead of its October 29 publication.

From Green Day and co-authored and illustrated by artist Frank Caruso comes a timely, inspiring illustrated rendition of the Grammy winning band’s classic hit “Last Of The American Girls”—the song Rolling Stone called “a fabulous left-wing love song to a rebel girl . . . when Armstrong sings, ‘she won’t cooperate,’ he’s giving her the highest compliment he can imagine.”

One of the most important and influential artists of their generation, the high-energy rock band Green Day has continued to inspire millions of fans worldwide with their music, political views, and iconoclastic conviction. Now, they transform their Billboard hit “Last Of The American Girls” into a full-color illustrated book of the song’s lyrics.

She’s a runaway of the establishment incorporated
She won’t cooperate
She will come in first
For the end of western civilization
She’s a natural disaster
She’s the last of the American girls

Since they exploded in the culture in 1994, Green Day has continued to surprise and energize its fans through the evolution of its music, songwriting, and artistic ambition. The band has long been ahead of its time, and “Last of the American Girls” is a testament to their vision. Released in 2010, the song about a spirited nonconformist young woman named Gloria embodies today’s cultural zeitgeist and is a salute and tribute to female empowerment and individuality. Celebrating true rebel girls—girls who push back, girls who use their voice, girls who say no—Last Of The American Girls takes on both the establishment and the upwardly mobile, espousing an infectious spirit that has never been more relevant.

Revisiting “Last Of The American Girls” & Green Day’s Non-Music Projects

Green Day has been a supporter of feminism and women’s rights for the entirety of their career. It’s exciting to see them show their support in releasing this book for women and girls everywhere. The 48-page graphic book will surely be accessible,  entertaining, and empowering. Be sure to get it once it’s out on October 29, 2019.

The book will feature the lyrics of Green Day’s 2009 song, “Last Of The American Girls,” from their epic album, 21st Century Breakdown. In 2010, the track was released as the album’s final single. Revisit the song and its music video below:

Beyond releasing traditional albums and singles, Green Day has branched out into other media a few times before. In 2009, their hugely popular album American Idiot got a musical makeover. It started in theaters in Berkeley, California before moving to Broadway in 2010. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong briefly starred in the production, portraying St. Jimmy. For several years, American Idiot has also been in talks for a film adaptation.

In 2015, Billie Joe turned to musicals again when he wrote the songs for These Paper Bullets! Billie Joe later repurposed many of those songs when he shared them as The Longshot, his 2018 side band.

In 2016, Billie Joe made his major film acting debut when he starred in Ordinary World. He wrote a few songs for the film, including its title track on Green Day’s album, Revolution Radio. Green Day has also been involved in producing numerous documentaries, both related to their own music and related to the larger punk scene from which they emerged.

Green Day’s Upcoming Music

Green Day’s last studio album was 2016’s Revolution Radio. That record included the singles “Bang Bang,” “Still Breathing,” and the title track. More recently, Green Day released their second greatest hits compilation, God’s Favorite Band, late in 2017. Last spring, Billie Joe also released the album Love Is For Losers with his new side band, The Longshot.

In December 2018, Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that he is “writing new songs” for Green Day. Although he didn’t reveal any other information, the band will likely begin recording in the coming months. With any luck, we could get a new album late this year; otherwise, 2020 sounds promising.
