New Editors Songs Registered: “Black Gold” & “Upside Down”
A couple of weeks ago, Editors shared their addictive new single, “Frankenstein.” Despite conflicting reports from the band members, it seems that it’s the lead single for their upcoming greatest hits album, due later this year. Frontman Tom Smith and bassist Russell Leetch confirmed that they have three new songs ready – recorded a few months ago with producer Jacknife Lee – and we may have uncovered the two remaining titles: “Black Gold” and “Upside Down.”
Both “Black Gold” and “Upside Down” recently appeared in the ASCAP database. (“Frankenstein” was also added.) Each of the three new songs list all five Editors members as writers. Interestingly, “Black Gold” also lists Andy Burrows as a writer. He and Tom Smith are working on a new Smith & Burrows album; maybe that crossed over into Editors territory?
We’ve known about “Black Gold” for several months, as the Editors band members used it to caption their studio shots on Instagram. However, “Upside Down” is a completely new title. How do you think the two new songs will sound? Let us know!
“Black Gold” & “Upside Down” ASCAP Registration:

“Frankenstein” is one of three songs Editors recorded with Jacknife in Los Angeles earlier this year. These tracks may appear on the band’s upcoming greatest hits album, due out later in 2019, though the band members are being coy about their exact plans.
Just one year ago, Editors released their 6th album, Violence. (It was one of our favorites of 2018.) After extensive touring and four singles – “Magazine,” “Hallelujah (So Low),” “Darkness At The Door,” and “Cold” – the band members worked on separate projects for a couple months. Frontman Tom Smith rejoined his other group, Smith & Burrows, to perform a brand new song. “All The Best Moves” is set to appear on their long-awaited second album together. Tom also appeared on a song with UNKLE called “The Other Side” last December, and then on “Crucifixion / A Prophet” in March.
This year, Editors shared the unreleased Violence song “Barricades” ahead of their special album, The Blanck Mass Sessions, released last month.
Editors’ latest single “Frankenstein” is a wonderful promise of more to come on – whether on an upcoming greatest hits compilation or for some other surprises. Enjoy the new single, and get ready to hear “Black Gold” and “Upside Down” soon. As always, keep checking back here for all the latest Editors music news.
