Is Green Day Releasing A New Single Next Week?!?
UPDATE 7/10: Sorry everyone, it looks like this rumor was false! According to Kerrang!, Green Day’s reps have confirmed that there’s “definitely no Green Day single any time soon.” Not gonna lie, we’re a little disappointed. But no worries: Green Day will release new music all in good time.
Green Day has been pretty quiet lately, but if the rumors are true, they’ve been hiding a big secret! According to Sophie K on Kerrang! Radio, Green Day is about to drop a new single next Friday, July 19th at 5pm UK time. (That’s noon in NYC and 9:00 am on the west coast.) Sophie K didn’t share any other details – like the song’s name – but it sounds like Green Day is ready to share the lead single from their next album. Their last two lead singles, “Oh Love” and “Bang Bang,” both came out in the summertime, in July and August, respectively. Green Day likes their summer singles and fall albums!
We haven’t heard any concrete news about the band actually recording anything in the studio. Last we heard, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was writing new songs for Green Day. Although the band members were pretty open about the recording process for the trilogy, they were quieter when making 2016’s Revolution Radio. If there is indeed a new single coming out next week, then they’ve certainly gone to new depths of studio silence!
Continuing the speculation, if Green Day’s lead single does come out this month, that will most likely mean we’ll get a full album before the end of this year.
Green Day’s last studio album, Revolution Radio, came out in October 2016. It was preceded by the singles “Bang Bang” and “Still Breathing,” and launched numerous lyric videos and music videos. In November 2017, Green Day shared their second greatest hits compilation, God’s Favorite Band, which included the new song, “Back In The USA.”
The band members also got into non-Green Day musical projects. They formed a covers band called The Coverups, and drummer Tré Cool reunited with his side band, Dead Mermaids, to release an EP in October 2018. Billie Joe started a new band called The Longshot, releasing their album Love Is For Losers – plus a number of EPs – in spring 2018. Last month, Billie Joe also appeared on Jesse Malin’s new song, “Strangers & Thieves.”
Earlier this year, Green Day announced plans to release a book called Last Of The American Girls. Fans will notice that this title comes from their 21st Century Breakdown single of the same name. The book is due out October 29th.
