Hear Lana Del Rey’s Spooky “Season Of The Witch” Cover
Lana Del Rey is about to release a new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, in just a few weeks. But today, Lana shared two new songs that won’t appear on the upcoming record. In addition to her political new song “Looking For America,” today we also get to hear Lana’s cover of “Season Of The Witch,” originally performed by Donovan in the 1960s. Lana’s recording of the song appears in the new Guillermo Del Toro film, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, out today.
Over the years, Lana has proven herself to be a skilled interpreter of others’ songs. She’s covered everything from Nina Simone’s “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and the Disney classic “Once Upon A Dream” to Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” and Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” (which will appear on her upcoming album). Lana is also perfectly at home singing songs from decades past. On “Season Of The Witch,” Lana sounds convincingly like a 1960s recording artist.
Lana hums over relaxed guitar and a quirky piano groove. Her vocals are filtered through a vintage effect, sounding like an ancient vinyl playing half a century ago. Old, spooky strings punctuate lines in the verses. Then, the chorus picks up the energy as drums come in and the volume rises. From the second verse onwards, Lana’s vocals layer and add harmonies for extra dynamics. “Season Of The Witch” is a fun, eerie song that sounds perfect with Lana’s new spin.

Lana has had many songs in movie soundtracks over the years, and this year will add several more to her list. We already got her cover of “Doin’ Time” for the Sublime documentary. Later this year, we can also look forward to a song with Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus in the upcoming Charlie’s Angels film, a possible song in the forthcoming Maleficent movie, and a possible song in the upcoming Elvis Presley film.
“Looking For America”
In addition to dropping “Season Of The Witch,” Lana shared one other single today: “Looking For America,” inspired by the back-to-back shootings in the United States last weekend. It’s a delicate song about the troubled times the United States are in. Find more about it here.
Norman Fucking Rockwell
Lana is also about to release a new album. You can pre-order Norman Fucking Rockwell from Lana’s official website here. The album comes out on August 30th.
We’ve already heard several songs in full – singles “Mariners Apartment Complex,” “Venice Bitch,” and “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it,” plus a live performance of “How To Disappear.” We’ve also heard several clips of album tracks.
Soon, we will get to see a double music video for two new songs. Lana just filmed a video for two tracks – “Fuck It I Love You” and “The Greatest” – so we should be hearing those songs and seeing the video soon.
Enjoy “Season Of The Witch” – and “Looking For America.” Neither is expected to appear on Norman Fucking Rockwell. The album will be released on August 30th. Catch up on everything we know about it so far here. We’ll have a lot more Lana Del Rey excitement in the coming weeks. As always, keep checking back here for all the latest music news.
