Tom Smith Teases New Smith & Burrows Lyrics
Earlier this week, Smith & Burrows officially entered the studio to record their long-awaited second album. Tom Smith (also known as the frontman of Editors) and Andy Burrows are currently in Nashville working with producer Jacquire King. Today, Tom shared a close-up shot of some lyrics, evidently for one of the songs the duo is recording. But if his caption is anything to go by, it seems these lyrics are for a song called “Upside Down” – which was registered as a new Editors song earlier this year. So either that song is actually for Smith & Burrows now… or Tom’s use of “upside down” in the caption is a coincidence that we’re overthinking.
Tom’s caption reads: “turning this town upside down for years @smithandburrows”
The lyrics – at least, the parts that we can actually see – seem to read as follows:
Can’t stand the was(…)
Goes dither, dither, dither
Little mind
Fee fi fo the fun
Gun I got a hun(…)
At just won’t d(…)
Clearly, we’re missing a lot on both ends of the lines. It will be interesting to learn the other words in this song and how it all fits together.
Check out Tom’s sneaky lyrics tease below:
Tom and Andy are sharing no shortage of behind-the-scenes studio footage. Check out some more recent pics from the recording process:
Smith & Burrows started back in 2011, when, that November, the pair released their debut album together, Funny Looking Angels. Comprised of covers and original songs, the Christmas album offered a unique take on the winter holidays. Eight years have since passed, and now the duo are finally preparing a follow-up album!
Given that they’re officially recording now, it’s unclear if the album will be ready by the end of this year. Will it, like the first record, be centered around Christmas? If so, let’s hope they’re quick at recording and mixing! However, the duo could be planning to focus on another holiday this time around. Perhaps Valentine’s Day? Or maybe the new music won’t be about one particular theme at all. We’ll know soon enough!
So far, we’ve only heard one taste of the forthcoming album. Last November, Smith & Burrows debuted their new song, “All The Best Moves.” Unless we misheard some lyrics, it doesn’t sound all that Christmasy…
Beyond Smith & Burrows, Tom’s band Editors are maybe cooking up a greatest hits compilation. They shared their single “Frankenstein” two months ago, and have at least two more songs ready to go. In an unexpected twist, Andy Burrows co-wrote one of the new Editors songs, entitled “Black Gold.”
For his part, Andy Burrows recently put out his album, Reasons To Stay Alive, earlier this year.
We’re excited to finally get that second Smith & Burrows album! And we’re ready to hear “Upside Down” – regardless of which group releases it. Hopefully Tom and Andy – and Jacquire King – will continue sharing more studio progress as they record in Nashville. As always, keep checking back here for all the latest music news.
