Lana Del Rey Is Larger Than Life In New “Doin’ Time” Music Video
Tomorrow, Lana Del Rey will release her new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell. Although Lana has shared several singles already – “Mariners Apartment Complex,” “Venice Bitch,” “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it,” and, most recently, “Fuck It I Love You” and “The Greatest” – today fans get to see a Rich Lee directed music video for her Sublime cover of “Doin’ Time.”
First released three months ago, her cover of “Doin’ Time” is masterful. Lana seamlessly weaves together both the laid-back, ska-meets-reggae style of Sublime’s original recording with her own chill vibe. This time, instead of singing about “Summertime Sadness,” Lana croons, “Summertime, and the living’s easy.” The song retains its magical, tropical soundscape, still an ironic contradiction in the face of lyrics about a cheating girlfriend.
In the new music video, Lana is an actual giant wandering around Los Angeles. She doesn’t really terrorize anyone, but she does effortlessly rip a palm tree out of the earth just to fan herself in the city’s overbearing heat. Fast forward a bit and we see that Giant Lana is just a character playing on the screen of an old drive-in theater. Perhaps this is their version of the B-movie classic, Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman.
Here we see another Lana – this time with a blonde bob, reminiscent of Lana’s Lizzy Grant days – on a date with her boyfriend. Too bad her boyfriend’s a cheater. We take a brief interlude to watch Giant Lana with the movie-goers; the “Doin’ Time” audio pauses as we hear vintage, cinematic scoring instead. But then the song comes back on and Giant Lana is stepping through the screen to seek revenge on Blonde Lana’s cheating boyfriend.

“Looking For America” & “Season Of The Witch”
Ever generous with her music, Lana released two additional songs on August 9th, although neither will appear on her new album. She wrote “Looking For America” following the back-to-back shootings in the US in the first weekend of August. Lana then released the song just a few days later.
Lana also recorded a cover of “Season Of The Witch” – originally by Donovan – for the new Guillermo Del Toro film, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.
In a few weeks, we should also hear Lana’s next soundtrack single, this time for Charlie’s Angels. She recorded a still-unannounced song and music video with Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus.
