Alicia Keys Drops Freeing New Single, “Time Machine”
Two months ago, Alicia Keys dropped her smooth new single, “Show Me Love” featuring Miguel. Today, Alicia has another new song: “Time Machine” is a slow-burn but addictively grooving song, and it comes with an equally low-key but kinetic music video.
“Time Machine” glides in softly, a heavy beat and synths building a rich soundscape for Alicia’s empowering lyrics. Perhaps the best part is the crescendoing pre-chorus, the repeated “out of your mind” refrain edging ever higher as Alicia shows her upper range. It’s a beautiful hook that leads to a funky and low chorus. It may start off unassuming, but “Time Machine” ends up growing into a stunning single with cool replay value.
The accompanying music video opens with Alicia working behind the counter of a roller skating rink. But apart from exchanging people’s shoes for skates, she also gets down on the rink floor, rolling and having a great time as the neon lights flash. It’s a simple but effective video that draws you into its dark, clubby-but-casual, joyous atmosphere.

You can stream or download “Time Machine” from all the major music providers here. Along with “Show Me Love” and possibly “Raise A Man,” we’re expecting it to appear on Alicia’s upcoming 7th studio album.
Before we continue, let it just go on record that 2019 is the year of roller skates. Following Natasha Bedingfield’s recent lead single “Roller Skate,” itself from her long-awaited new album Roll With Me, Alicia’s video gives us a nostalgic look at nighttime roller skating. If Natasha had released a music video for her song, it would likely have offered the flipside: a sunny, outdoor skate through the streets.
More From Alicia
Alicia’s last album, Here, came out in November 2016. Despite the three new songs, we don’t yet have an announcement of her next full album. However, we’re hoping to learn more in the coming months.
We do, however, have confirmed news of a memoir! Next year, Alicia will share her first book, More Myself: A Journey. Co-written by Michelle Burford, it’s being published by Flatiron Books and Oprah Winfrey’s new book imprint, An Oprah Book. More Myself: A Journey comes out on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
Enjoy “Time Machine” and its new music video, and be sure to revisit Alicia’s other two 2019 singles. With any luck, an album announcement will come next. Keep checking back here for all the latest Alicia Keys music news.
