In the last week, The Weeknd has come back with not one but TWO new songs. After hearing “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights,” both from his upcoming 2020 album, the former gets a new music video. If the song paints the picture of a man who’s lost his way, the video fully affirms it.
“Heartless” begins in a swirl of kaleidoscopic music, a beat grounding it before The Weeknd starts his first verse. He sings about his directionless, destructive habits, repeating the same tropes common throughout his music. On the chorus, The Weeknd uses these bad habits as evidence that he’s actually heartless. Maybe money and fame have made him this way, but no matter how much he tries, he can’t overcome his stone-cold ways. Rather than marriage in his future, he only foresees misery.
The new “Heartless” music video amplifies the bad habits, set in the “Blinding Lights” of a glittering casino in the middle of Las Vegas. The Weeknd, clad in a nice red suit, stumbles through the casino, drinking, smoking, and playing all the high-stakes games. He smiles and laughs, more fascinated by the sky and lights than any sober person ever was. But despite the joy he seems to feel, it’s clear he’s in a bad place. An act of desperation leads to an unexpected frog-kiss scenario, but it doesn’t lead to a princess…

The Weeknd In Review
The Weeknd’s last album, Starboy, came out in fall 2016, hot on the heels of his 2015 record, Beauty Behind The Madness. It launched singles like “Starboy,” “False Alarm,” “I Feel It Coming,” and “Secrets.” In 2017, he also joined frequent collaborator Lana Del Rey on her single, “Lust For Life,” the title track from her fourth studio album.
Early in 2018, The Weeknd teamed up with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther single, “Pray For Me.” His last solo project was a 6-song EP, My Dear Melancholy, featuring the single “Call Out My Name.”
Earlier this year, The Weeknd featured on several more singles, including Nav’s “Price On My Head,” Gesaffelstein’s controversial “Lost In The Fire,” and the Game Of Thrones song “Power Is Power” with SZA and Travis Scott.
