Evanescence Talk 2020 Plans To Record Next Album
A few weeks ago, Evanescence shared the cover of “The Chain,” originally by Fleetwood Mac. It follows their 2017 special album Synthesis, as well as 2018’s Synthesis Live. Beyond those releases, Evanescence has been quiet for most of the 2010s, and haven’t released a studio album since 2011. Luckily, they started writing and demoing earlier this year, and it looks like they’re ready to being recording!
In a new interview Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee did in Mexico, she revealed the band will begin officially recording in early 2020. They’ve been working on new music off and on throughout 2019, and have tentative hopes to release the album in late 2020. Now that they’re ready to record, we’re getting that much closer!
As Amy explained in the interview:
We’re working on our new album! Yay! For the first time in a long time. We’ve been getting together for little, we call it band camp, like little writing camps for a few days, and we just work on new music. We’ve got a good handful of really cool songs going right now. So I’m excited! I think it sounds awesome! We’re back to rocking.
So we’re going into the studio sometime in the beginning of next year to start some recording. We’re not going to do it all at once. We’re going to just go as we go, kind of thing. So yeah, there should be new music to hear pretty soon.

And how will these “really cool” songs sound? In Reddit AMA last month, Amy Lee revealed more about the upcoming album, comparing it to Evanescence’s 2006 record, The Open Door:
Well, I listen to our new music every day. I’m absolutely living in it. This is always the case for me, really, but I’m in the center of the zone right now, watching the picture take shape and swimming inside every new piece as it appears. I can’t wait for you to hear it. It’s dark and heavy. Its also got moments of weird and sparse. Little bit of everything. Definitely some The Open Door vibes but not the same.
We have to say, The Open Door is our favorite Evanescence album here at Hidden Jams. So hints that the new music will sound anything like that are especially exciting!
More Music From Evanescence & Amy Lee
During the November Reddit AMA, Amy also teased some other upcoming releases, including some more covers and a song written for a TV show.
First up, “The Chain” may not be the only cover we hear from the band. They recently started another one, and Amy is open to doing a second solo covers EP.
Its been too long since my solo covers EP came out, I have the demos and know exactly what I want to do for the next one. I’m just putting most of my focus into band stuff right now. But it will come! I actually have one more Ev cover in the works that we started on while we had the orchestra already assembled for the Chain….
She also suggested that some collaborations are on the horizon, perhaps besides her song with Lindsey Stirling, “Love Goes On And On.” When asked about how being a parent has changed her creative workflow, Amy stated:
I was just doing an interview yesterday saying how being a mom of a young child has forced me to multitask, and I realize it’s actually great. I used to be so hyper-focused on only one thing at a time, and hated breaking from the one thing or letting myself do anything else till it was done, that it drove me crazy. Now that I have to do multiple things at once so much, split my brain to get to it all, actually, I think its making me more inspired and productive. I don’t have to finish one song before I let myself start another idea. I don’t have to only do the album right now, we are also touring and recording covers and doing collabs.
Because of that, it gives me a fresh perspective every time I come back to each unfinished project and makes me have new ideas, without feeling stuck, frustrated, or bored.
When asked about whether she’ll do more songs for film, like she did with “Speak To Me” for Voice From The Stone and the Aftermath songs for War Story, Amy said she does have something in the works!
I am working on a song for a new TV show right now but I can’t talk about it! Mainly because I’m not allowed to, but also because every time I talk about what I’m working on before its done it gets canned. Fingers crossed! LOL
Finally, do you remember Amy Lee’s song “Find A Way”? She performed it live with Dave Eggar back in late 2013, and we’d hoped it would appear on her 2014 solo album, Aftermath. Unfortunately, we never got a studio version of the song. Now Amy asks us, should it be an Evanescence song or a solo song?
I love that song! Little fun fact, we were originally writing to try to get it placed in the movie Prince of Persia (hence the sort of eastern vibe). I can’t decide if that song goes in the Evanescence or solo category. What do you think?
Our vote: both please?
2020 Return Of Evanescence
Evanescence has been making a comeback over the last few years. In early 2017, the band released a boxset of their three studio albums and b-sides, and later that year we got their electronic-meets-symphonic album, Synthesis. After plenty of touring, they put out Synthesis Live in fall 2018.
The band also has a major tour coming up with the band Within Temptation. Their World Collide tour will take the two bands across Europe in April 2020. Find dates and tickets now so you can see them next spring.
Get ready for Evanescence’s next album, and stay tuned for more news about it in the coming months. For now, enjoy their cover of “The Chain”! As always, keep checking back here for all the latest Evanescence music news.
