Hilary Duff Records Cover Of Third Eye Blind’s “Never Let You Go”

Hilary Duff is back as Lizzie McGuire and still going strong in Younger, but she’s not recording new music. Or so she said just a few weeks ago, and in every other interview in the last few years. But today, all that changed. Hilary shared a picture of her in the studio with her fiancé, musician Matthew Koma. She was recording vocals with only some cheeky emojis as a caption.

Fans rejoiced, wondering if this will be a one-off song… or a full album. While we don’t know about any new album plans, we can confirm what the song is. Hilary Duff teamed up with Matthew Koma and the DJ/producer RAC to record a cover of Third Eye Blind’s early 2000s hit, “Never Let You Go.” Released 20 years ago last month, the song is actually a great fit for Hilary, reminiscent of her early albums, Metamorphosis and Hilary Duff.

In a new Instagram story shared by both RAC and Matt, we can hear a bit of how the song is coming together. Hilary sings the chorus, originally done in falsetto by Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins.

There’s no word yet on when we’ll get to hear the trio’s cover of “Never Let You Go,” or what project it’s for. Will it appear on a new album by one of them? Will it serve as a soundtrack for Hilary’s shows, Lizzie McGuire or Younger? Let’s not forget that the last recording we got out of Hilary was her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies” for Younger four years ago.

Hilary’s Personal Life

Last May, Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma announced their engagement. There’s no word yet on when the wedding will be, but 2020 looks promising. Two months ago, their daughter Banks turned one. Following son Luca, born during her prior marriage to Mike Comrie, Banks is Hilary’s second child.

Though we first heard of Hilary and Matthew as a couple in late 2017, they previously worked together on her last album, 2015’s Breathe In. Breathe Out. Matthew wrote “Confetti,” “Arms Around A Memory,” and the album’s title track, with producing credits on all three.

More Music?

In terms of music, the last three years since Breathe In. Breathe Out. have been quiet. Hilary hasn’t confirmed any concrete music plans, though she has written and recorded here and there. In a 2018 Build interview with the cast of Younger, the interviewer asked about Hilary’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies,” which she recorded for Younger, and any upcoming music plans she may have. She had no real plans for music outside of the show at the time, “which is so sad.” She continued:

The show keeps me so busy – when am I going to tour? How am I going to make a record? I do have a musician boyfriend who’s writing songs all the time, and I’m like, “I want that one!” And he’s like, “You’re not making a record right now, so… no, that’s not for you.” But [music] is just a part of my life.

With Hilary’s fiancé being such a great musician, songwriter, and producer, we’re hoping his musical ambitions will rub off on Hilary… and this new cover sure seems promising! Hopefully it’ll lead to more from Hilary. For now, we’ll just have to wait until she gets the itch to release all this music she’s written. Catch up on all we do know about her anticipated next album, expected sometime in the 2020s. Earlier this year, several leftovers from Hilary’s 2012-2015 music sessions leaked. That will hold fans over until Hilary releases another album.

Coming Soon

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the new “Never Let You Go” cover. We can’t wait to hear it, and with any luck it could lead to more music from Hilary. While we await further info, check out Third Eye Blind’s original recording of “Never Let You Go” below. As always, keep checking back here for all the latest Hilary Duff music news.
