Alicia Keys Lifts Others Up In New Song & Video, “Underdog”
Alicia Keys is getting closer and closer to releasing her upcoming 7th album, simply titled ALICIA. After sharing “Raise A Man,” “Show Me Love” featuring Miguel, and “Time Machine” last year, her first song of 2020 is now here. “Underdog” is perhaps the most immediate of the new songs so far, and an empowering anthem for inclusivity and love.
Over freeing acoustic guitar, Alicia sings about various underdogs: a homeless man, a single mother, a woman who escaped an oppressive country. The verses are descriptive, painting a portrait of these characters and their circumstances. Then the chorus comes in with new power, an ode to the hustlers and dreamers. Alicia’s message is clear: Don’t judge others, because they have stories to tell and deserve love and respect. And no matter what you’re going through, there’s a path forward to achieve your goals. By the end of “Underdog,” it sounds like an anthem for us all to sing, and its percussive sound drives that positive sound home. This is the most instant song Alicia has released from her upcoming album so far.
The music video for “Underdog” brings those lyrics to life. We see the homeless man, dressed in a red jacket and selling CDs on the sidewalk. We see the single mom who takes public transportation and talks to the homeless man. Later on, we see a trio of girls take a taxi, evidently to their prom. Meanwhile, Alicia is walking the sidewalks and dancing with this diverse group of people, bringing everyone together for a joyous dance.
