Shakira Shares Vibrant New Music Video For “Me Gusta”
Two months ago, Shakira shared her latest single, “Me Gusta,” featuring Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA. It’s our first taste of her upcoming new album, expected later this year. Today, fans can finally see the single’s colorful new music video.
“Me Gusta” is a catchy but emotional song. Over a reggaeton beat, Anuel AA and Shakira take turns, singing the verses and choruses in halves. Anuel AA takes the lead while Shakira plays the role of responding. It’s a song of disfunctional love and wanting to reclaim what the couple once had. It samples Inner Circle’s 1992 song, “Sweat (A La La La La Long).”
The music video starts with a shot of a train zooming through forests and tunnels before cutting to a range of different sets, each with its own vibrant color scheme. We see Shakira and Anuel AA in a retro kitchen, decorated in pastel pinks and blues. (Enjoy a refreshing return to brunette Shakira!) Then we see them each separately on that train: jewel-toned greens, oranges, and purples. While Anuel AA orders food, Shakira stalks the halls. We also find them in a luxurious dining hall, the table covered with strange dishes, and Shakira’s golden hair matching the yellow palette. They argue and don’t seem to enjoy their (odd) food. Finally, Shakira struts in a blue bedroom accentuated with hot pink parasols.
Throughout the video, Shakira and Anuel AA portray that tense feeling described in the lyrics. But it’s eye-catching video that’s playful and fun in spite of the subject matter.
