Hayley Williams Wonders “Why We Ever” In Newest Single

We can now count down in just weeks when we’ll get to hear Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams’s first solo album, Petals For Armor, due out on May 8th. We’ve already gotten an EP of five of its songs – simply titled Petals For Armor I – and now Hayley is gearing up to release another EP, unsurprisingly called Petals For Armor II. Following “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris,” “Over Yet,” and “My Friend,” our fourth single from the second EP is “Why We Ever,” out now with a new lyric video. Hayley co-wrote the song with Micah Tawlks, while Taylor York produced the song.

Fitting with the sound of two of the previous three songs Hayley shared, “Why We Ever” builds on a low-key soundscape. The bass is fairly funky on the choruses, lifting the song up and feeling almost fun. Hayley sings about a relationship that fell apart, wondering why it had to end as it did. The second half of the track moves in another direction, feeling more somber as Hayley admits to her loneliness and apologizes for freaking out. It’s sad and reflective, yet dreamlike and powerful.

Unlike previous lyric videos, which highlighted behind-the-scenes looks at recording the songs or photo shoots, the lyric video for “Why We Ever” takes us on the road. Most of the footage is of Hayley driving down freeways and two-lane roads. Later on, footage of a car wash from inside the vehicle creates a whimsical backdrop for the music.

You can stream or download “Why We Ever” from all the major music providers here. Along with “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris,” “Over Yet,” and “My Friend,” it will appear on Hayley’s upcoming second EP, Petals For Armor II, expected next week. It should feature one additional song.

Hayley shared a personal story about “Why We Ever” in an Instagram post yesterday:

Touring & Paramore’s Future

Hayley previously announced an intimate solo tour across North America and Europe, was to begin in May. However, in all likelihood, the tour will be postponed due to coronavirus. You can still check out current date and locations – and purchase concert tickets – here, but realize these are very much subject to change.

Hayley has also confirmed that Paramore is not over. They will make music together again, though it probably won’t sound like her forthcoming solo material. In any case, Hayley indicated that this solo album is an important step that will only help the band grow.
