Avril Lavigne Updates “Warrior” in Inclusive New Single, “We Are Warriors”
One year ago, Avril Lavigne shared her personal album, Head Above Water. Along with the title track, the closing song “Warrior” detailed Avril’s battle with Lyme Disease. But now, Avril has updated the song to reflect the current times we’re in. She’s transformed it into “We Are Warriors,” and it is dedicated especially to those on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic – everyone from nurses and doctors to grocery store workers and postal workers and firefighters.
In a statement, Avril announced:
I re-recorded Warrior to reflect our current world and all the amazing heroic things you’re all doing. To all the hospital workers, postal service people, grocery store workers, police and firemen, every single one of you who has had their world shaken. This is for you.
In addition, I’m going to be donating the net proceeds of this song to Project HOPE, an incredible organization that is on the front lines keeping doctors and medical staff safe all over the world.
Compared to the album recording of “Warrior,” the new single “We Are Warriors” retains the same music and mood. It’s a gentle ballad, but it captures vigor, too. Now, instead of finding Avril fighting a lonely battle, the song brings us all together. We are warriors, and we will survive when we help each other out and give each other strength. It’s a lovely and timely song, and all the more inclusive now.

Head Above Water
In February 2019, more than five years after releasing her eponymous fifth album, Avril Lavigne made her music comeback with Head Above Water. Many of the songs, including the lead single and title track, detail her battle with Lyme Disease. But it’s not all about her health battle; singles like “Tell Me It’s Over” describe relationship woes, whereas “Dumb Blonde” offers an unexpected feminist anthem. Its latest single, “I Fell In Love With The Devil,” is a stunning track with aspects comparable to Lana Del Rey.
Avril had stated that “It Was In Me” would be the next single. With a sound and message harkening back to Avril’s early ballad, “I’m With You,” it sounded like a great choice for the final single. However, it has been nearly a year since we heard any updates on the single getting sent to radio or having a music video. What a shame.
You can stream or purchase Head Above Water at all the major music providers here.
Avril toured the US in support of Head Above Water last fall. She had Asian and European tours scheduled for this spring, but alas, Coronavirus derailed the tour. Dates are expected to be rescheduled for later this year or 2021.
