In between unexpected singles (“Bikini Porn”), collaborations (“Calling On Me” with Sean Paul), and cover (“I’m Coming”), Tove Lo is still promoting her 2019 album, Sunshine Kitty. So far, it’s launched the singles “Glad He’s Gone,” the Alma-assisted “Bad As The Boys,” “Jacques” with Jax Jones, “Really Don’t Like U” featuring Kylie Minogue, “Sweettalk My Heart,” “Are U Gonna Tell Her?” with MC Zaac, and “Equally Lost” featuring Doja Cat. Today, to help make the quarantine a little better, Tove shared her lyric video for “Mateo.”
Out of all the tracks on Tove’s new album, “Mateo” is among the closest to being a ballad. The escalating vocal riff and production come off as more energized, but Tove paints an image of a man she perceives as out of her league. A pre-chorus about pretty girls moves the song in a moodier direction. It then launches into a chorus calling out to the man Tove longs for, the vocal melody taking on a Latin flavor. It’s an emotional, mid-tempo ballad. But if the “Gritty Pretty” intro was any indication, maybe Mateo isn’t worth her time after all?
Throughout the lyric video, Tove dances to the music regardless of where she is. If you’ve seen her other lyric videos – like that for “Are U Gonna Tell Her?” – then you may recognize some of the locations. Tove dances in front of a stained glass window, by a green tile wall, in a cathedral, and out on a rural street at night. It’s one of her more serious performances, transmitting the moody vibe of the song well. And, karaoke style, the words appear below so you can sing along.
