Hayley Williams Sweetens Summer with “Sugar On The Rim” Lyric Video
Early last month, Hayley Williams released her debut solo album, Petals For Armor, and we’re still loving it. Following four music videos and 11 lyric videos – most recently for “Watch Me While I Bloom” – the show continues with a sweet lyric video for “Sugar On The Rim.” A highlight from the album, Hayley wrote the song with Taylor York, who also produced.
“Sugar On The Rim” is perhaps the most surprising track on Petals For Armor. It opens with unconventional percussion and Hayley robotically intoning the title. As she speaks faster, fat bass comes in, giving weight to the track. Thirty seconds in, Hayley launches into the first verse, crooning a descending melody. It grows more dancey before getting to a pre-chorus highlighting impressively low vocals. We then get to the jittery chorus: Over a kinetic, disco pop beat, Hayley chants about new sensations and exceeded expectations. “Sugar On The Rim” is a standout that just gets better with time.
The lyric video takes us behind the scenes of when Hayley and her team developed the song. Based on the time stamps, it seems that she was writing “Sugar On The Rim” in October 2019. By December 29th and 30th, Hayley was in the studio recording vocals. Then in January 2020, the song was already worthy of dancing along. It’s a candid and fun video with karaoke-style lyrics at the bottom.

Touring & Paramore’s Future
Hayley had previously announced an intimate solo tour across North America and Europe, which was supposed to begin right about now. Unfortunately, just like everything else, the tour has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New dates are expected for 2021, so hang tight.
Paramore fans also don’t need to worry: Hayley has also confirmed that Paramore is not over. They will make music together again, though it probably won’t sound like her forthcoming solo material. In any case, Hayley indicated that this solo album is an important step that will only help the band grow.
