Last month, the late Juice WRLD’s third studio album, Legends Never Die, was posthumously released. Though not originally included on that album, its sixth single is “Smile” featuring The Weeknd. It came out last Friday and has since been added to digital versions of Legends Never Die. Today, “Smile” gets an animated music video.
Juice WRLD kicks off “Smile,” rapping over a heavy but buoyant beat. He sings the chorus first, an endearing promise to do anything he can to make a loved one smile. The first verse is ominous when he predicts he may die soon, but he quickly brushes it off and redirects his attention to alleviating his girlfriend’s sadness. Following a second chorus, The Weeknd croons his verse about being desensitized. He sings of a breakup and why it didn’t work out, yet he still wishes for his ex’s happiness. “Smile” closes out with a final, uplifting chorus.
The music video was animated and directed by KDC Visions. It starts with Juice WRLD through a sort of paradise, with sunshine, flowers, and butterflies making a heavenly backdrop. We then see his surviving girlfriend, on a bed and gazing at photos of her with Juice WRLD. All that’s left of him now is his memory in the pictures and in a bedside snow globe. Later, The Weeknd stumbles out of his car after a crash, but he just takes the other victim’s car and drives off. By the end, Juice WRLD is depicted as an angel.
