Tove Lo Uncovers Debut Acting Role in Film ‘The Emigrants’
Swedish pop star Tove Lo has made a name for herself in the music world. But after four albums, a slew of hits, and songwriting credits on several other well-known singles, Tove is branching out into acting. It’s just been announced that she’ll make her acting debut in the upcoming film, The Emigrants. Based on the classic novel series by Vilhelm Moberg, this is an updated film adaptation, following the acclaimed 1971 version. Tove will play the character Ulrika. The film is expected to come out on December 25, 2021.
In an interview with Deadline, Tove explained that trying out acting was always “a dream rather than an intention,” but she is “very happy” to be part of this upcoming film. She stated:
It’s a classic told from a female perspective, which I love. I also love the character Ulrika, she’s a fighter but still vulnerable.
Filming is set to begin in western Sweden in September. Despite the pandemic, Tove isn’t worried about filming. She explained:
Swedes are good at social distancing but they’ve clearly taken a different approach that I’m not sure would work in other places… I don’t really know how I feel but all the meetings/rehearsals so far around the film have been very careful and I trust the team to make sure we all follow the rules.
More About The Emigrants
In addition to Tove Lo, The Emigrants will also star Lisa Carlehed, Gustav Skarsgård, Sofia Helin, and Liv Ullmann. (Liv also appeared in the 1971 adaptation; she’ll play a different role this time around.)
Director Erik Poppe said of the upcoming film:
By getting to know the female characters and the relationships between Kristina, Ulrika and Judit, we get a new perspective in the understanding of The Emigrants journey, which I think will bring new dimensions to this well-known story.
SF Studios’ Fredrik Wikström Nicastro added:
We would not be doing the books justice if we didn’t have the ambition to make this project the major Swedish film of the decade. Kristina and Karl Oskar’s story will take audiences on a life-changing journey as we see the love and struggle they undergo when they embark together to start life over again in America, and Ulrika has a central role to play in telling this story. I am convinced that Tove Lo will be unforgettable in this role.
More from Tove Lo
Tove isn’t the only singer-turned-actress we’ve heard about this month. Just last week, Sara Bareilles revealed that she’s also stepping into acting. She secured a role in the upcoming comedy series Girls5eva, helmed in part by Tina Fey. But as with Sara, we’re sure Tove will be a natural on the silver screen!
Tove’s last album, Sunshine Kitty, came out in fall 2019. Three months ago, it was rereleased as the Paw Prints Edition, featuring eight bonus tracks.
Sunshine Kitty had previously launched the singles “Glad He’s Gone,” the Alma-assisted “Bad As The Boys,” “Jacques” with Jax Jones, “Really Don’t Like U” featuring Kylie Minogue, “Sweettalk My Heart,” “Are U Gonna Tell Her?” with MC Zaac, “Equally Lost” featuring Doja Cat, and, most recently, “Mateo.”
Tove shared her new single “Bikini Porn” earlier this year, including “Passion And Pain Taste The Same When I’m Weak” as its b-side. Then in March, Tove shared her cover of “I’m Coming,” originally recorded in Swedish. Finally, she dropped her heartbreak-inspired “Sadder Badder Cooler” in may. Those four songs are now part of the Paw Prints Edition of Sunshine Kitty.
Get ready to see Tove Lo in The Emigrants at the end of next year! Until then, enjoy all her latest music, starting with Sunshine Kitty: Paw Prints Edition. Keep checking back here for all the latest Tove Lo news.
