Shakira & Black Eyed Peas Share Energetic “Girl Like Me” Music Video
Six months ago, Shakira and the Black Eyed Peas released their collaboration, “Girl Like Me,” included on the group’s album, TRANSLATION. Today, that song gets a new music video.
Although it only came out this year, the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira had originally started working on “Girl Like Me” back in 2008. After 12 years and numerous versions of the song, it’s great that it’s finally out for everyone to hear.
Shakira starts “Girl Like Me,” singing the chorus. Her voice takes on a playful tone as she sings the title, ending with an unconventional, meow-like vocal. Then each of the Black Eyed Peas members takes turns rapping a verse, throwing in plenty of Spanish to fit with their Latina guest. They each have their idea of a dream girl, and unsurprisingly, that girl invariably looks like Shakira. Shakira gets her own verse, confirming that she is indeed as great as the boys think. It’s a fun, light song that gets better with each listen.
The new music video offers us an energetic version of what this idealized Shakira looks like: a girl who is sporty and active. In some shots, Shakira and two backup dancers wear retro workout gear and give a choreographed dance that emphasizes quick footwork. Later, Shakira skateboards through a CGI world, the only bright spot there. The three men in Black Eyed Peas are less active, instead choosing to deliver their respective verses from backdrops that are steampunk and futuristic.
