CHVRCHES Launch New Era With “He Said She Said”
After plenty of teasing in the last couple of weeks, three days ago, CHVRCHES shared their new single, “He Said She Said.” It’s our first taste of their upcoming fourth album, due out this spring or summer. Today, the song gets a new music video.
Although frontwoman Lauren Mayberry has recently gone blonde, “He Said She Said” sounds comfortingly like the CHVRCHES we know and love. Over electro-pop synths and propulsive drums, Lauren quotes the toxic and often contradictory things a man has said to her. Or maybe it’s multiple men who’ve said these harmful words? The chorus is repetitive but insistent: It’s hard not to feel like you’re losing your mind when bombarded with messages like those. It’s a short but impactful song, and we can’t wait to hear more from the upcoming album.
Its new music video was directed by Scott Kiernan. It opens on a red-lit room, a sort of spinning door contraption commanding attention in the center. Lauren appears onscreen, looking right at the camera even as her image glitches out. Soon we start to see the dark room where photos are being developed. Lauren’s taking charge of them… until she falls into one of the soaking photos. It’s a thought-provoking video, and the imagery certainly adds to the lyrics.
