Garbage Offers Up “Anonymous XXX” Music Video

Garbage’s excellent new album, No Gods No Masters, just came out last June. It’s offered four singles so far: “The Men Who Rule The World,” “No Gods No Masters,” “Wolves,” and “The Creeps.” Today, the song “Anonymous XXX” gets a (NSFW) music video.

“Anonymous XXX” is a surprising song on No Gods No Masters. It opens with some gentle, heavenly keys and then a quick strum of an acoustic guitar and some suggestive vocalizations from Shirley. Horns come into the mix and the energy builds up to something celebratory and escapist. On the first verse, Shirley equates pain with love, setting up a character who is troubled but has found a comforting fixation. The chorus is actually rather resigned, but then the post-chorus arrives with a hypnotic, free-falling, chiming soundscape full of empty promises. Congas add to the fun before the song moves onto the next verse. “Anonymous XXX” is an experimental song, and a standout on the album.

Drummer Butch Vig said this about the track:

As we worked on it, we were trying to incorporate some Roxy Music, like there’s the sax and some of the keyboard sounds. Steve kept doing these guitar riffs, which to me sounded like Talking Heads and so I started thinking about records like Remain in Light that just have these amazing grooves. We’re channeling a lot of different influences, but I think it still sounds like Garbage.

As with the videos for “The Men Who Rule The World,” “Wolves,” and “The Creeps,” this clip was directed by Javi Mi Amor. However, unlike those three, this one features filmed footage rather than collages and animations. Fitting the sexual theme of the song, the video shows several people in states of intimacy, particularly highlighting kinkier preferences. It’s gritty and lacks glamour, instead offering something raw and honest.

BeautifulGarbage Reissue

Next month, Garbage will release the 20th anniversary reissue of their third album, BeautifulGarbage. (It was recently pushed back from October 1st to November 5th.) Garbage already shared the “Androgyny” rough mix. We then got a “Shut Your Mouth” remix on August 30th and a “Breaking Up The Girl” remix on September 14th.

In a teaser photo last March, we got a preview of what will appear in the BeautifulGarbage rerelease, including several song titles. Most of them appeared on BeautifulGarbage in 2001. “Pay You Back” ended up being released as a b-side under the name of “Enough Is Never Enough.” “After Life,” on the other hand, has not knowingly been released up to this point. The CDs pictured also featured demos, “Shut Your Mouth” remixes, and more.

We now have the full tracklisting, spread across four discs. The first disc is just the original 13 songs that appeared on BeautifulGarbage, remastered for 2021. The second disc is the most interesting, featuring all the b-sides from that era, plus demos, rough mixes, and some acoustic and live recordings. (No “After Life” though!) Discs three and four are both filled with radio mixes and remixes of “Shut Your Mouth,” “Androgyny,” “Breaking Up The Girl,” “Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!),” and “Parade.”

Look out for the 20th anniversary rerelease of BeautifulGarbage on November 5th.
