Willow Smith & Avril Lavigne “G R O W” in New Music Video

Three months ago, Willow Smith released her album, lately I feel EVERYTHING. One of the album’s standout tracks was “G R O W,” performed with Avril Lavigne and featuring Travis Barker on drums. Today, the new single comes to life with an accompanying music video. The video was filmed before the album’s release in July.

“G R O W” has instant, infectious energy, guitar and drums propelling it forward. It starts with the empowering chorus before Willow sings the first verse. Following another chorus, Avril takes on the second verse. At barely over two minutes long, it’s a short song, but it packs a punch. Willow has perfectly captured the early 2000s pop punk sound, not only on this song, but across her new album. And Avril Lavigne fans will likely get major throwback vibes from “G R O W” – it sounds like early Avril, complete with the powerful message and youthful earnestness.

The music video starts with Willow arguing with a guy in a bedroom. She storms off, seeing her face on magazines, but upon realizing her need to grow, she does… into a giant! In between standing as tall as the skyscrapers, a happier Willow is seen with the guy from the bedroom and with a group of friends. On the second verse, Avril goes through a similar transformation. She tears a poster of herself off a wall, but then she joins Willow in being larger than life. The video ends with the two performing alongside each other in the street.

Willow’s recent album, lately I feel EVERYTHING, came out in July. It’s a major stylistic change for her: more pop punk rather than the alt-R&B of her previous three records. The album was preceded by the singles “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” featuring Travis Barker and “Lipstick.”

More From Avril

Last December, we learned Avril Lavigne was recording music with MOD SUN and producer John Feldmann. At the end of December, Machine Gun Kelly joined the “jam fam” in the studio. Travis Barker has also been involved. In February, Avril confirmed that her new album is already done. Starting this spring, she began teasing song lyrics and titles, though it still unclear when her new album will come out. It missed the summer plans, but could still be out this fall.

Avril had promised in August, and again in September, that new music was coming in “a month or two.” By now, that means we should be hearing something new any day now. If not this month, then certainly in November, right? Though with the holidays just around the corner, it might be the new year before we get the full album. We shall see.

Avril’s last album, Head Above Water, came out in February 2019. It launched the singles “Head Above Water,” “Tell Me It’s Over,” “Dumb Blonde,” and “I Fell In Love With The Devil.” In spring 2020, she reworked its closing song, “Warrior,” to fit the COVID-19 pandemic. Renamed “We Are Warriors,” its proceeds have gone to help those in need during this pandemic.

At the beginning of this year, Avril appeared on MOD SUN’s single “Flames,” taken from his album, Internet Killed The Rockstar.
