Avril Lavigne released her self-titled fifth album on November 5, 2013. The album was originally slated for a late 2012 release, but was delayed when label executives wanted Avril to write more radio-friendly songs. Three singles preceded the album’s release: First was “Here’s To Never Growing Up” in April 2013, which reached the top 20 on radio charts. The second single, “Rock N Roll,” came out in August, but the song fared worse on charts. Ballad “Let Me Go” featuring Avril’s husband, Nickleback singer Chad Kroeger, was the the third single in October. The fourth single, released in spring 2014, was meant for Asia only, but the music video for “Hello Kitty” brought the song lots of (mostly negative) attention. This was presumed the last single, until the fan favorite “Give You What You Like” was released in February 2015.
Avril Lavigne had a very mixed sound, ranging from Avril’s well-known upbeat pop rock to songs that have a more indie alternative sound. Avril shows the most growth on songs in the latter half of the album, which are more mature and introspective. Highlights on Avril Lavigne include “Give You What You Like,” “Hello Heartache,” “Hush Hush,” “Bad Girl,” and “Falling Fast.”
