Green Day took the world by storm with the release of their major label debut album, Dookie, on February 1, 1994. Although Green Day had previously released two records on the independent label, Lookout! Records, it was clear by 1993 that they had outgrown the small Bay Area label and were ready to move to Reprise. The young punk trio's debut was an unexpected success thanks to catchy singles like "Longview," "Welcome To Paradise," and especially "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around." 1994 saw whirlwind success for Green Day, spurred on by an infamous, muddy performance at Woodstock in the summer. By the end of the year, Green Day had come out as the breakout artist of the year, earned numerous Grammy nominations (winning Best Alternative Music Album), and sold millions more copies of Dookie than anyone expected. Dookie sparked a revolution, and catapulted Green Day to the top of the world and into the homes of millions around the globe. Green Day's popularity has only been matched in the American Idiot era a full ten years after, but Dookie remains the band's biggest album with 20 million copies sold to date, and it is still regarded as one of the best albums of all time.
Highlights on Dookie include "When I Come Around," "Basket Case," "Having A Blast," "Longview," and "She."
