Sara Bareilles is getting ready to release a new album, the follow-up to 2013’s Grammy-nominated The Blessed Unrest. On November 6th, we will have What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress in our hands and coming out our speakers, but for now we have just our first taste of the new record: “She Used To Be Mine” is Sara’s lead single, a swelling ballad about losing track of who you are.
Many of Sara’s fans have known “She Used To Be Mine” for a while already. Sara debuted the song live in July 2014, and continued to play it during concerts that year. It comes from a new musical called Waitress, for which Sara wrote all of the songs. “She Used To Be Mine” is one of them, and is an important part of the musical. Waitress began showing in Cambridge, Massachusetts in August; it will go to Broadway next spring.
You can see the lyric video for “She Used To Be Mine” below. It features footage of Sara Bareilles in the studio and performing the song live, as well as scenes from the musical, Waitress.
Sara’s new album, What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress is different kind of album for the songstress. As the title implies, the tracks that make up Sara’s fifth studio album are taken from the musical Waitress. It’s a new kind of album for Sara. Most of her music is very personal and drawn from her own experiences; in contrast, the Waitress songs were written with a very different perspective. As Sara told Playbill earlier this year:
It’s been a really interesting experience of channeling these characters’ stories but also finding myself as a listener. I feel more like an audience member than a composer. It’s a new role for me.
You can buy “She Used To Be Mine” on iTunes or stream it on Spotify now. What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress will be released on November 6th. More details about that, such as full track listing, should be announced soon. In the meantime, Sara also has a new book – Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) In Song – hitting stores on October 6th, with a mini book tour across the US to follow throughout October. Sara has had a busy year, and it’s getting more exciting as the weeks pass. Keep checking back here for all the latest Sara Bareilles news.
