Vanessa Carlton Shares Simple Video For “House Of Seven Swords”

Vanessa Carlton’s latest Liberman single is the echoing “House Of Seven Swords,” inspired by the advice found in tarot cards. The Seven of Swords card, when reversed, represents mental challenges and breaking free from old habits in order to follow a new path. It symbolizes taking those difficult first steps. As Vanessa told the Wall Street Journal, “The one that hit me the hardest was the idea that we are each a sword, and we choose the side of ourselves that we put forward, and what we choose leads to our character.”

Vanessa wrote the song a few years ago for her younger brother, who was just about to graduate from college. “The words and the melody kind of came at the same time, and I realized I was kind of writing it for him,” Vanessa explained. “At the same time, the song is absolutely a message to myself, too, probably.”

In the music video, the message could also easily be interpreted as coming from Vanessa to her baby daughter. The video was filmed in her home in Nashville and was directed by Daniel Henry. It’s a simplistic video that looks more like a moment in time rather than a full-fledged story.

“House Of Seven Swords” comes from Vanessa’s new album, Liberman, released one month ago via Dine Alone Records. The album was preceded by the singles “Willows” and “Operator,” as well as an EP highlighting the song “Blue Pool.” Liberman is available on iTunes now, and you can also catch Vanessa on tour between now and early 2016.
