See P!nk’s Video For “What About Us” Off New Album, ‘Beautiful Trauma’

Last Thursday, after weeks of building anticipation, P!nk released her new single, “What About Us”. It’s our first taste of her upcoming seventh album, Beautiful Trauma. The song is surprisingly gentle and emotional, a far cry from her usual lead singles (see: “So What,” “Blow Me One Last Kiss”). Instead of energetic choruses and rollicking guitars, we hear P!nk at her most reflective and somber. The new single, even with its dance track undertones, is a protest ballad. Once the initial expectation wears off and you give it a few listens, the new single will captivate you.

Today, “What About Us” gets the video treatment. It starts off in the aftermath of a protest, political messages transmitted over the radio as Pink gets her hair shaved off. It’s the end of a long night, but then the video takes us back in time, showing a couple of men fighting on a couch in the desert as P!nk ruminates in a diner. Like the song itself, the video is subtle yet clear in its political message. By the end, the song shows strength in unity and diversity.
