Ellie Goulding Reflects On When She Was “Sixteen” In New Single

Ellie Goulding has been super busy with soundtrack singles and previews of her own upcoming fourth album. Following “Close To Me” and “Flux,” Ellie’s third single from her forthcoming album is “Sixteen.” As the title hints, it’s  a nostalgic nod to our teenage years, when everything’s changing and we have too much time and yet not enough.

“Sixteen” starts with a light atmosphere and chopped vocals, a taste of the post-chorus that comes later. The verses are softer, Ellie recalling moving out of home at 16 over a subdued beat fizzing with energy. She describes the untamable freedom she and a friend had, running out of time but still not caring too much. Then the chorus hits, a slow-motion, cinematic theme turning into an anthem for all our teenage years. “Sixteen” returns to the upbeat ecstasy that started the song, keeping the mood cheery. These switches between carefree joy and reflective slow-downs capture the full nostalgia of “Sixteen.”

The song comes with a lyric video featuring photos of numerous Ellie Goulding fans when they were 16 years old. It’s a sweet homage to her fans, but also to all of us when we were young and starting to grow up.

You can stream or download “Sixteen” from all the major music platforms here. “Sixteen” is the latest single from Ellie’s upcoming fourth album. The new record should also include “Close To Me,” featuring Swae Lee and Diplo, and Ellie’s recent ballad, “Flux.”

In addition to previewing her forthcoming album, Ellie has also been busy with numerous soundtracks. Last month she shared “Do You Remember,” which appears in the film Fighting With My Family. A week ago, Ellie also dropped “In This Together” from the new Netflix nature documentary series, Our Planet. And that’s not all! Later this month, Ellie will have a song on the new Game Of Thrones soundtrack album, For The Throne. That’s a lot of new Ellie Goulding music!

Ellie’s long-awaited new album will serve as the follow-up to her 2015 record, Delirium. While we don’t have a title, tracklist, or release date for the forthcoming record, we expect to find out more in the coming weeks. In an interview last October, Ellie did reveal how the new music will sound. She said that most of the songs she’s written are quite sad, written about things that have built up over the years. Luckily they’re “not reflective” of how Ellie currently feels. In contrast to previous records, Ellie’s new songs talk about “quite specific things that have happened in my life, and something specific that happened to a friend of mine.”

Enjoy Ellie’s new single, “Sixteen,” and its nostalgic lyric video. A full music video should be coming soon too, so stay tuned for more about that! Keep jamming to the new song, and look out for details about Ellie’s album in the next few months. Keep checking back here for all the latest Ellie Goulding music news.
