Sara Bareilles Joins Todd Carey on New Acoustic Version of “Smile”

Here’s a fun surprise to brighten up this week! Singer-songwriter Todd Carey just released a new acoustic version of his 2007 song “Smile,” recruiting Sara Bareilles to sing with him. She had previously sung backup on that original version – which came out months before “Love Song” made her a household name – and makes a lovely reprise here.

The stripped version of “Smile” stays true to that original first heard on Watching Waiting in 2007. Even without the electric instruments, it retains the same power and emotion. The layers of acoustic guitar and drums, and the beautiful harmonies between Todd and Sara, make this recording of “Smile” feel complete. This is the rare kind of stripped track that’s full enough to be a legitimate single.

More from Sara Bareilles

Two months ago, Sara put out her album More Love: Songs From Little Voice Season One. As the title suggests, these are songs she wrote that were featured in her new Apple TV+ series, Little Voice. While Sara originally wrote some of the songs 15+ years ago, others are newer compositions specifically written for the show.

Her last studio album was Amidst The Chaos. It launched the singles “Armor” and “Fire,” plus promo singles “No Such Thing” and “Saint Honesty.”

Last month, Sara joined Meg Toohey for their new song “Lucky Streak,” honoring Broadway star Nick Cordero, who died of COVID earlier this year. Tomorrow, fans will get to hear another collaboration, this time a duet between Sara and Josh Groban: Their cover of “Both Sides Now” will appear on Josh’s album Harmony, out November 20th.

Beyond music, Sara can also add acting to her ever-growing resume: In August, it was announced that Sara will star in a new comedy series called Girls5eva, coming to Peacock in the next year or so. They’ve already shot the pilot episode.
