Last summer, it was announced that Sara Bareilles would star in a new Peacock series called Girls5eva. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock would serve as producers, while Meredith Scardino would write and produce. Since then, Busy Phillipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry joined the cast. Now, all these months later, fans can finally stream the entire first season! With only eight half-hour episodes, it’s easy to binge in just a few hours. Trust me; I already did.
Girls5eva follows four women after the fame and success have disappeared. Dawn, Summer, Grace, and Wickie were once part of a late ’90s / early 2000s girl group; they even had one hit single back in the day. But their music career fizzled out, one of their members died, and now the four remaining are in their early 40s living ordinary lives. But what if they had a second shot at success? When their 20-year-old single gets sampled by a popular new rapper, Girl5eva has a chance to reunite, record new songs, and return to the stage. What follows is a hilarious and winding journey full of hijinks and heart.
In case you somehow need further convincing that this show is worth watching, check out the Girls5eva trailer below:
But wait, there’s more! We couldn’t have a show about a girl group without an album of their songs, could we? Heavens, no. Luckily, fans of Girls5eva can also enjoy the accompanying new album!
Girls5eva (the album) features nine original songs. Six of them are sung by Girls5eva, one is just Dawn (Sara Bareilles), and two are by other artists. Sara Bareilles wrote the final song of the album, the anthemic “4 Stars.”

More From Sara Bareilles
Girls5eva isn’t Sara’s first foray into TV, but it is her first acting role in this format. Last summer, Sara’s show Little Voice debuted its first season. Sara wrote all the songs for the series and, in September, released her versions of them on the album More Love: Songs From Little Voice Season One.
Sara had previously written all the music for the hit Broadway musical, Waitress. She went on to star in the show several times and release her versions of the show’s songs on her album, What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress. In summer 2019, she also shared an EP of her demos, What’s Not Inside: The Lost Songs From Waitress.
2019 also gave us original new music. Sara released her album Amidst The Chaos in April 2019. It launched the singles “Armor” and “Fire,” plus promo singles “No Such Thing” and “Saint Honesty.” She toured the album that fall, and now, this May 21st, we’ll get to relive the concert experience with her live record, Amidst The Chaos: Live At The Hollywood Bowl.
Sara also has plans to release a few EPs of previously unreleased songs. We’re thrilled about that! There’s still no word on when we’ll hear them or what songs will be included. Our guess is that this summer or fall the EPs will be available.
Be sure to watch the entire first season of Girls5eva – it’s available now! You’ll also want to listen to the full Girls5eva album, because it’s just as fun as the show itself. Let us know what you think of the series and the music in the comments below!
