The Weeknd Updates ‘After Hours’ Album With 3 New Bonus Tracks

Ten days ago, The Weeknd released his long-awaited new album, After Hours. It’s an impressive record, and has launched the singles “Heartless,” “Blinding Lights,” and “In Your Eyes” – each with a music video. The Weeknd already surprised fans when he updated digital versions of the album to include five bonus tracks, including four remixes and the live SNL version of “Scared To Live.” Now, After Hours is being updated with three more bonus tracks – and this time, they’re original, unheard songs. “Nothing Compares,” “Missed You,” and “Final Lullaby” are tracks 15, 16, and 17 on the album. The aforementioned remixes and live recording currently extend the album to track 22, though The Weeknd stated today that they’ll be separated out onto an EP this Friday.

“Nothing Compares” fades in on a low hum before a brass synth sound introduces a melodic hook. The Weeknd croons over a mid-tempo beat, singing “Nothing compares to the emptiness we share” on the chorus. Then, harkening back to his new song “Faith,” The Weeknd brings up religious themes again on the bridge, saying “I sin too much to pray.” Although it’s an emotional breakup song, the sound is irresistibly cool.

Atmospheric sounds and clicking percussion form the base for “Missed You,” another soft ballad dedicated to The Weeknd’s ex-girlfriend. On the chorus, The Weeknd laments, “I should’ve known not to let you go.” Only two minutes in, the song starts to fade away, ending too soon.

“Final Lullaby” pings in gently, growing into a sweet and dreamy song. It’s sad though, The Weeknd saying, “I can’t make you stay in this broken place.” Instead, he’ll “put us to sleep,” ending what they once had for good. Like the track before it, “Final Lullaby” cuts off suddenly, ending before we’re ready to say goodbye.
