The Weeknd Continues “Heartless” Antics In “Blinding Lights” Video

At the end of 2019, The Weeknd suddenly dropped two new songs, with an album expected soon. Following the chaotic video for “Heartless,” The Weeknd’s song “Blinding Lights” now gets the video treatment, continuing with the same setting and vibe.

“Blinding Lights” blurs into focus, a quick drum beat grounding it before synths straight out of the 1980s lighten it up. Low bass synths and twinkling higher ones give an ultra-retro soundtrack to The Weeknd’s lovelorn lyrics. After being alone for too long, he hopes that someone can teach him to love. The pre-chorus brings the energy up a notch, The Weeknd describing a cold and deserted Las Vegas. On the chorus, the song smooths out, solidifying its presence as a perfect pop single. “Blinding Lights” continues the best of Starboy, and promises an excellent album in the new year.

The video for “Blinding Lights” picks up right where “Heartless” left off. The Weeknd is still wandering around Las Vegas in his nice red suit, drunk and/or high and living in his own dreamworld. He speeds along the roadways in a fancy silver car, but also spends far too much time dancing in the middle of the streets. At one point he’s the only audience member for a woman’s singing performance, and in a moment of magical realism, The Weeknd floats from his seat to the stage to join her. Some more surprises await you in the video, directed by Anton Tammi.

The Weeknd In Review

The Weeknd’s last album, Starboy, came out in fall 2016, hot on the heels of his 2015 record, Beauty Behind The Madness. It launched singles like “Starboy,” “False Alarm,” “I Feel It Coming,” and “Secrets.” In 2017, he also joined frequent collaborator Lana Del Rey on her single, “Lust For Life,” the title track from her fourth studio album.

Early in 2018, The Weeknd teamed up with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther single, “Pray For Me.” His last solo project was a 6-song EP, My Dear Melancholy, featuring the single “Call Out My Name.”

Last year, The Weeknd featured on several more singles, including Nav’s “Price On My Head,” Gesaffelstein’s controversial “Lost In The Fire,” and the Game Of Thrones song “Power Is Power” with SZA and Travis Scott.

The Weeknd has been working a new album, and it looks like we’re finally getting really close to hearing it!
